A charming illustration of a mounted 11th Hussar during the First World War, now available for your fridge!
This is one of a number of unique drawings made by Major Robert Alexander Lister Hartman during the First World War. He served in the 11th Hussars from 1914, joining the Regiment when he was just 18. The figure on top may well be Major Hartman himself while the horse is likely to be ‘LC’ (Short for Elsie) a mare who carried Major Hartman safely through the war!
Sadly LC was wounded in August 1918 and later died of her wounds. After the army Hartman went on to write and illustrate the popular children’s books starring ‘Buffin’.
