The Girls We Left Behind Us

Â

The 11th Hussars embarked from England in 1866 for a long period of service in India, having been based in England and Ireland for the previous eight years. They did not return from India until 1878. The Regiment had previously served in India for 19 years from 1819 to 1838.

Their departure from England is depicted in an oil painting by Thomas Jones Barker circa 1866 and is entitled ‘The Girls We Left Behind Us’.  The painting was acquired for The King’s Royal Hussars Museum in 2001 with assistance from the Victoria and Albert Purchase Grant Fund and it can be seen in the Regimental Museum in Winchester.Â
