The story behind this painting is that about 1890, Major Gage’s Sqaudron was called out from Manchester to quell a riot in Chester. The riot was quelled before they got there, but while hacking back, they chanced on a meeting of the Cheshire hounds. Ayala said “Boys, I think we go hunting.” He then galloped up to the Master with the classic remark ‘Morning Master – What’s the cap for a Squadron?”
