During the Cold War (1947 to 1989) the 10th, 11th and 14th/20th Hussars, and from 1969 The Royal Hussars, spent several long tours in Germany to discourage a Russian invasion. Troops serving with the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) were always in a high state of alert in case the Russians attacked. Military exercises took place regularly, often on a large scale and with troops from other Allied nations. The 11th Hussars were reroled from armoured cars to Centurion tanks and served in Hohne, Germany from 1962 to 1969. In 1966 the 11th were the first regiment to be equipped with Chieftain tanks.
