The 14th/20th Hussars moved to Sabratha in Libya as the Divisional Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Division in Middle East Land Forces, equipped with Centurion tanks. The Division itself was stationed in the Canal Zone in Egypt, but there was not enough space in the Zone to train in the deployment of an armoured regiment. The regiment remained in Sabratha, ready to move into Egypt if it should become necessary to help stabilise the growing hostility between Syria, Egypt and Palestine. Although Sabratha was a comfortable billet, it was isolated, with no other British regiment within 50 miles (80 kms). For relaxation, the officers and older other ranks who had been in the regiment before the war turned to horses, with racing and polo. Football and amateur dramatics were also popular with all ranks.
