In March 1956, the 14th/20th Hussars were posted to Münster, Germany, as part of 20th Armoured Brigade.
Since the regiment had left Germany in 1947, the Army of Occupation had transformed itself to BAOR, the British Army on the Rhine. The mission of the Armed Forces in Germany was to be the first line of resistance to an attack westwards by the Russians, who had imposed communism on Eastern Europe at the end of the Second World War.
The Army and their families had settled into barracks which were self-contained, with the military supermarket, the NAAFI, for shopping and cinemas run by the Army Kinema Corporation for entertainment. Getting to know the local population, learning German, playing sport with local teams, and Adventurous Training were all part of the new regime in Germany.
