The regiment deployed to Afghanistan from May to November 2012 on Operation HERRICK 16.
Operation HERRICK was the codename under which all UK operations in Afghanistan were conducted from 2002 to the end of combat operations in 2014. The regiment were based in Helmand Province. Regimental Headquarters had tactical responsibility for the district of Lashkar Gah, with B and C Squadrons forming dismounted elements in patrol bases. A Squadron were tasked with advising the Afghan Army. D Squadron were mounted in Warthog troop carriers, and under command of the Light Dragoons Battle Group. The fighting was at times intense, and a number of soldiers suffered major injuries. During a later tour to Afghanistan with the 9th/12th Royal Lancers, Major Angus Tilney was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous leadership under fire.
