The Iberian Peninsular War from 1808 to 1814, known in Spain as the Guerra de la Independencia, formed part of the Napoleonic wars, which ended with Napoleon’s abdication.

In 1808 the 10th Light Dragoons sailed to the Peninsula to assist Spain and Portugal after a French invasion, and during the retreat to Corruna fought under the command of General Sir John Moore at the Battles of Sahagun (21st December 1808) and Benevente (29th December 1808). In 1811 the 10th and 11th Light Dragoons both returned to Spain with the Duke of Wellington, for a successful campaign.

The 14th Light Dragoons were involved in the campaigns throughout the war, in Portugal, Spain and France. The 20th Light Dragoons were in Portugal at the Battle of Vimiera in 1808, and in 1813 they were involved in the campaign in the east of Spain.
