The 14th Light Dragoons witnessed an example of French Chivalry.

On 25th September 1811 General Marmont launched 14 squadrons of the Imperial Guard against the Allied army, driving back the outposts at Carpio. Initially they were driven back by squadrons of the 14th and 16th Light Dragoons. A further attack forced the 14th to withdraw. During the withdrawal from Carpio the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Bathurst Hervey narrowly missed being killed when a French officer charged in to cut him down. The Frenchman saw that the Colonel had only one arm, saluted him and charged on.
