A Corporal’s patrol is commended by Wellington.
In the pursuit of the French after Salamanca, Corporal William Hanley of the 14th Light Dragoons led a 7-man patrol of the 14th and some 1st German Hussars. They captured a 30-strong party of French troops, including a colonel, for which they were specially commended by Wellington. Corporal Hanley was presented with a silver medal by his officers for his courage and resource.
