The Commanding Officer, Col Browne-Synge-Hutchinson VC, instituted The Regimental Medal .
The Commanding Officer, Colonel Browne-Synge-Hutchinson VC (formerly the Major Brown who had won his Victoria Cross in the Boer war in 1900) instituted the 14th King’s Hussars’ Regimental Medal. The medal, an entirely regimental decoration, was to be awarded to a King’s Hussar of any rank who had contributed in some conspicuous manner to the military efficiency or military honour of the regiment. Length of service or attainment to a particular rank could not in itself be counted as a sufficient qualification.
The medal, to be worn on the right breast on formal regimental occasions, is unique in the Army and still remains in the gift of the Commanding Officer of The King’s Royal Hussars today. Since 1960, officers and soldiers attached to the Regiment have also been eligible for the award.
